"A Comparison of Japanese and Chinese Culture"

Thank you to Wendy Lo of the Morikami Japanese Museum for her presentation, “A Comparison of Japanese and Chinese Culture” to the Bethesda PrimeTime Club on April 17, 2012. Giving insight into the Asian culture, the entertaining and interactive seminar included a “culture quiz” and an informative segment on the different meanings of common hand gestures and colors. For example, in Japan, tapping your knuckles on the table indicates a “thank you” to your server for pouring your tea. As for colors in the Japanese culture, white represents death, blue represents mourning and red is a lucky color.

“America’s Art: Highlights from the Smithsonian American Art Museum”

The American Art Museum celebrates the aspirations, character and imagination of the American people throughout three centuries, from the colonial period to today.  Smithsonian docent, LeeAnn Lawch, visited Bethesda Memorial Hospital in January and provided an informal lecture for Prime Timers on images from the museum’s collection and explored how artists depicted the American experience.
