Non-Profit, Community Hospital becomes First and Only ENERGY STAR® Facility in Palm Beach County
(Boynton Beach, FL --) Bethesda Memorial Hospital, the flagship not-for-profit hospital of Bethesda Healthcare System, has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR® certification, which signifies that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.
"Bethesda Memorial Hospital is honored to accept EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said Roger L. Kirk, President and CEO of Bethesda Healthcare System. "Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to protecting our environment while also lowering our energy costs, which enhances our ability to provide quality health services in a caring manner.”
To earn the ENERGY STAR, Bethesda took a series of actions: changed parking garage lighting from high pressure metal halide vapor to T8 electronic fluorescent; implemented the recycling of waste to energy; retrofitted fluorescent lights to higher efficiency fluorescents; converted exit signs to LEDs; and incorporated the use of high efficiency upgrades to chillers for air conditioning systems.
Bethesda is the only hospital in Palm Beach County to receive the ENERGY STAR® certification, and becomes the second hospital in Florida to receive this designation.
